How often do you find yourself putting off a task that needs to be done on priority and
instead doing something else? Procrastination is one of the major success blocks that affect
productivity in life. To varying degrees, all of us procrastinate. The consequences of this are
felt across all aspects of our lives for example leaving office late due to the inability to
complete tasks for the day, running late for meetings and engagements in the day because
you couldn’t get ready in time, your car breaks down since you kept delaying to fix that
weird noise you were hearing in the engine over the last two weeks, you are advised bed
rest for a month since you ignored the initial back pain and unnecessarily postponing your
doctor’s appointment .
If procrastination is working against you and you’d like to change things around, here are 5
ways by which you could do it:
1) Plan, Plan & Plan More: Yes, there is nothing better than planning ahead to get most
of your tasks successfully completed. A tip that works best is to plan your next day
before going to bed. That way you wake up with a mind that may already have soime
solutions ready for you and do not consume too much of energy spending your first
few hours of the morning in planning. You get to start the day with a plan that is
already formulated the previous night and you can begin to take action immediately.
So begin to take out that pen and notepad and start planning.
2) Take a decision to just begin: We often delay getting things done because we are
waiting for the right moment or the right answer. For example we delay responding
to emails because we may not know what to say at that moment. However, I’d
suggest getting started with things immediately even if you take time to think what
to say; even the mere process of thinking is a step towards working on that task in
itself.
3) De-Clutter and get organized: Remember to clear up all the unnecessary clutter that
is lying around you forming energy blocks. Let’s say you have a messy desk, or your
office is full of things that you do not need, it could become a magnet of
procrastination. It is only human to feel negative towards doing a task when you see
a mess around you. Get organized, arrange your desk, organize your files in the order
they need to be worked on, keep your surroundings clean and neat, by doing this
you will instantly attract positive vibes which will get you going with tasks
immediately.
4) Set reminders and use alarms: Let’s assume you have several tasks that you need to
get done. It is obvious that you will not be able to complete them all at once. Some
of your tasks may need to be done on specific days and at specific times. Let’s say
you have an appointment with your lawyer for an ongoing litigation 2 days from
now, for which he has asked you to keep some documents ready. You may have
made a note of it in your diary, but how often have you forgotten it when the time
has arrived? With the use of alarms and reminders it is less likely that you’ll forget to
attend the meeting or work on things to prepare for it.
5) Reward yourself on accomplishments: It may sound crazy but you could motivate
yourself to complete a task by deciding on a reward for yourself upon its completion.
Rewards can be something small like a snack or a movie or even a day at the
massage parlor. This will actually motivate you to finish the task at the earliest so
that you can enjoy your reward.
